An accident on Emirates Road left 13 people dead on the spot and 14 others injured. A bus carrying 29 Asian workers got in to the accident when the driver hit a truck parked on the hard shoulder.

According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Interior (MoI), 117 pedestrians died and 797 others were injured in accidents involving speeding motorists in 2013. The Dubai Police has issued numerous fines for speeding offences, rash driving and using mobile phones while driving. Other causes of accidents include careless overtaking, and sleep deprivation due to driving for long hours at a stretch.

Also, one effective way to curb speed related deaths and accidents is to install the speed limiter devices onto vehicles. The Dubai Police is working with the RTA to make the installation of speed limiters mandatory on buses, while some companies have already installed it beforehand.

This move has seen a significant decrease in the risk of accidents due to over speeding.  “Speed limiters have reduced the risk of major accidents by 10- 15%. More info
