"Accomplishing the Dubai Metro project, considering its length and number of stations, in less than 5 years exceeds what the Ukraine has achieved over 50 years!," commented Kolesnikov who he headed a senior Ukrainian delegation in a visit to the RTA where he was received by H.E. Dubai Metro transported 5.9 million passengers last month, its high-est monthly average in two years, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) reported on Wednesday. The number puts the daily average for Green Line just over 50,000 passengers, while it is around 160,000 for the Red Line.
The RTA is hoping that with the opening of the Green Line and the future opening of the Al Sufouh Tram, the market share of public transport users will rise to 30 per cent per cent. Mr Al Tayer said that between 11 and 12 per cent of that 30 per cent will be carried by the Metro, 6 to 9 per cent by bus, and the remainder by taxis and marine transport.
Dubai Metro’s Red Line opened in September 2010, bringing 52 kilometres of travel options for Dubai residents and visitors. This month, the 22km Green Line opens with 16 of its 18 new stations operating, along with transfer stations Khalid Bin Al Waleed and Uniion Square, promising easier access to even more of the emirate’s best views and venues.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), has recently inspected the Green Line of the Dubai Metro to make sure that all systems go for the scheduled opening on Friday 09/09/2011 where customer service employees and inspectors have already assumed their duties at various stations.
The operating company for the Dubai Metro has completed experimental tests of the Green Line - the moving test without passengers. A source in the company said, “The company has completed interiors in the Metro stations and more than 80 per cent of parking in Al Qusais, with a capacity of 2,700 vehicles.”
The Dubai Metro Red Line resulted in a quality shift in the integration of mass transit modes in the Emirate as it formed the initial phase of a project considered the first of its kind across the region. This line proved to be absolutely important in inspiring the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) personnel to vigorously proceed ahead with the completion of the second phase of the project represented by the Green Line.
