Dubai: Work on the Dh802 million Phase 3 of the Dubai Canal project begins as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) steps up efforts to extend the Creek.
If you are ever on a bus between December 2nd Street and Dubai Creek, keep a sharp eye out for Hamad Al Jallaf. The RTA bus inspector patrols Bur Dubai, Al Mankhool, Al Raffa, Karama and Al Jafiliya - known as Area 4 - eight hours a day, five days a week. Every morning he puts on his beige uniform and gets out his portable card reader that allows him to check passengers' Nol cards in seconds.
Dubai Ferry’s route number three will be introduced from October, connecting the cruise terminal at Port Rashid with Al Ghubaiba station in Bur Dubai. This is the second ferry to connect with Al Ghubaiba station and will serve tourists as well as residents. The new route is part of the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) efforts to upgrade the marine transport services.
Researchers in Dubai are looking at ways to lure people out of their cars and on to public transport, after it was found that nine in 10 motorised trips are made in private vehicles. The figure is extremely high, exceeding the global average of 60 per cent, and even the Middle East average of 85 per cent.
"We are very happy seeing the huge turnout. The support from the public shows that with constant efforts we will be able to popularise the culture of using public transport regularly," Hussain Mohammad Al Banna, Director of Traffic Department at the RTA, told Gulf News yesterday evening at the packed Union Station.
