The greatest challenge that will be faced in delivering the MEP work required for Qatar's $36bn worth of rail work planned will be in being able to bring in enough skilled staff into the country, according to Arabian MEP CEO Vasanth Kumar.
The metro and rail system, which would include a connection to Bahrain, will cost $35 billion to $40 billion to build, Mee said. The first phase of the project will connect the airport in the south to a racetrack on the northern outskirts of the capital Doha, he added. The second phase will extend the network to cities in the north and south.
The Automated People Mover system is part of the Doha Metro project and is scheduled to be completed by 2018, according to Harj Dhaliwal, project director (railways) at Qatari Diar. Dhaliwal gave a presentation on the project at the UITP (International Association of Public Transport) Middle East and North Africa Qatar seminar held at Grand Regency Hotel on Thursday.
The metro is part of Qatar’s $42.9bn railway project that will also include an east coast link, a high-speed link, a freight link and a light rail system. The railway will serve suburb of Doha and developments such as Lusail, Education city and West Bay.
The high-speed railway includes the Doha Metro Network; an east coast rail link; a high-speed link between the new Doha International Airport, Doha city centre and Bahrain via the planned Qatar-Bahrain Friendship Bridge; a freight rail link based on the GCC rail link studies; and light rail systems within specific developments, including Qatari Diar’s Lusail mega-project.
