100 Emiratis Take Up Positions In Dubai Metro – Al Tayer

H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), announced that 100 Emiratis have been employed in Dubai Metro and assumed their jobs last Wednesday after completing their training & qualification period for these jobs.

The step comes in the context of RTA Emiratization plan of Dubai Metro posts as the contract signed with Serco, the company responsible for operation and maintenance of Dubai Metro, provides for training and finding placements for UAE nationals such that Emiratization rate will be in the order of 30% – 50% in leadership and supervisory jobs over the first five years of the metro operation.

Al Tayer met with the UAE nationals who have been employed in Dubai Metro and posted to various positions such as customer service, front-end, and ticket conductors, in the presence of the CEO of Rail Agency Abdul Majeed Al Khaja, Regional Director of Serco (Middle East) Zafar Raja, CEO of Dubai Metro Operation at Serco Co. Paul Anderson, and several RTA department directors.

In the outset of the gathering, Al Tayer welcomed the new employees and said: “You ought to be proud of working in Dubai Metro; the national project which is considered one of the pioneer projects worldwide and described by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, as “Dubai Metro is a cause of pride for the UAE”.

RTA is keen on attracting qualified Emiratis and dispatching them to training courses as well as national & international forums and conferences to enhance their qualifications and empower them to keep abreast of the global developments such that Emiratization will be a reality”.

RTA Chairman & Executive Director called on the new employees to be diligent and dedicated to the interest of the nation, seek to achieve customer satisfaction, apply the rules and procedures developed by the RTA to safeguard the project facilities, and exercise law enforcement measures against offenders. He also called on them to benefit from the existing expertise to improve their job performance such that they would become part of Dubai Metro success story.

It is note-worthy that the number of Emiratis planned to be employed in various jobs of Dubai Metro over the initial five years of the project according to the contract signed with Serco is estimated as 583 employees; 71 in leadership and senior management positions, 430 as engineers in the fields of health, safety, environment, quality, operation and maintenance, 74 in customer service jobs, and 8 in support services jobs such as human resources, marketing and finance.

Al Tayer said that by the end of this 2009 RTA would be employing 218 Emiratis; 26 in senior administrative posts, 8 in support services jobs such as human resources, marketing and finance, 74 in customer service jobs as front-end employees, and 110 engineers in the fields of health, safety, environment, quality, operation and maintenance.

He further added that 125 jobs will be available for UAE nationals in 2010; including 15 in senior management positions, and 110 in engineering fields of health, safety, environment, quality, operation and maintenance. In 2011, 2012 and 2013 RTA is set to employ 240 UAE nationals; at a rate of 80 employees per annum including 30 in senior management positions, and 210 in the fields of health, safety, environment, quality, operation and maintenance.

RTA is proceeding with regular checks to ensure that Serco Company is committed to Emiratization of jobs and attracting more Emirati employees in keeping with the provisions of the contract. The company was directed to ensure that enforcement officers, front-end employees and ticket conductors are exclusive jobs for UAE nationals.
