Dubai’s transport authority has announced the award of contracts for the construction of cycling and running tracks at five destinations across the emirate.

2The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said in a statement that the projects – part of Dubai’s strategy of encouraging active lifestyles – will be built at Warqaa, Mushrif, Mirdif, Mizhar and Khawaneej.

The tracks, which extend a total of 57km and cost about AED79 million ($21.5 million), will be constructed during a 12 month period, the statement added.

“The construction of the dedicated cycling and running tracks projects… will provide suitable options to encourage residents to practice sport and cycling. It also ensures that the infrastructure of residential districts is conducive to the practicing of sport as it has immense health benefits for community members,” said Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the RTA.

He said the first project covers the construction of a cycling and running route extending 32km at Mushrif, Mirdif, Mizhar and Khawaneej along with three bridges for the combined use of cyclists and pedestrians at a cost of AED52 million. More info
