The field visits program cover the University of Wollongong for two days (October 16 to 17), Dubai Men's College of Technology for two days (October 18 to 19), the Canadian University for one day (20 October), the Dubai Women's College of Technology for two days (October 23 to 24), the American University for two days (October 25 to 26), and Zayed University for one day.

The Traffic and Roads Agency, a sector of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), revealed plans to place more pedestrian crossings along roads across the city to curb jaywalking and make Dubai pedestrian-friendly.

A dramatic fall in traffic accidents this week has been directly linked to the three-day disruption in BlackBerry services. In Dubai, traffic accidents fell 20 per cent from average rates on the days BlackBerry users were unable to use its messaging service.

Most heavy vehicles in Dubai, owned by transport companies, are older than ten years which is a major road safety risk, a senior traffic official said on Wednesday, calling for increased monitoring of these vehicles across the UAE. "Statistics have shown that the older the vehicle, the higher the risk."

As many as 606,000 people used public transport on November 1 last year, a 39 per cent increase from the daily average of 436,700 riders in 2010. This year, the response is expected to be even greater, with the Green Line of the metro being an added attraction.

The day will be marked with a free use of the Dubai Metro, public buses and water bus for Nol card holders. The second round of the initiative is set to be widely popular among public and private entities as well as all community segments.

Shopping malls near Dubai's new Green Line have already enjoyed an increase in visitors as more customers opt to take the Metro over their cars. The two malls will compete with a huge amount of retail in the Metro system after the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced last month that 200 retail units were available to rent in various stations.

“Real estate is part of the city. We are developing, Dewa is developing big projects, RTA has completed the Metro and so many roads. We too have completed a huge sewage plant. We are building new public gardens and launching so many other projects. So it is not just real estate,” he added.

Of the 27 stations in the entire rail network, 21 on both the lines are already named. While some of the remaining stations, which are named after historic landmarks, won’t be available for branding. The RTA earned Dh2 billion in the first phase of corporate branding and expects to generate more from the second phase.
