SMRT's Q2 net profit falls 13.3%

The move comes as part of an effort to increase the number of residents using public transport from the current 12 percent to 34 percent within the next ten years.

"The Public Transport Day initiative, which attracts participation of various government authorities and departments as well as private sector entities and different community segments, aims at highlighting the role of Dubai Emirate in supporting the initiatives that contribute to the improvement of the environment, attaining sustained development, encouraging inhabitants to use public transport modes and promoting the modern mass transit means provided by the RTA including the Dubai Metro, public buses and marine transit systems," said Al Tayer.
Convenience in transport
The study revealed that 37 per cent of the sample - consisting of 53 people with disabilities - had future plans of using public transport to commute to work, place of study or entertainment venues, while 20 per cent would use public transport only in case of necessity. The latter noted that “using the water bus and public buses create the fear of using public transport because of the fear of being subjected to harm or damage during transporting.”

The CEO of Rail Agency, Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) Adnan Al Hamadi, urged the public to use metro on the Public Transport Day; a key initiative recently launched by the RTA scheduled on November 1st, 2010.
He hailed the initiative, which is the first rolled on by the RTA to encourage the public to use public transport modes and benefit from the multiple advantages and features that render them trustworthy by all users at all times. The Metro is one of these means that offer commuters a convenient ride across Dubai roads, he noted.
